What is all terrain drilling technology in HDD machine?
Structure: The hydraulic motor, drill rod, and pilot drill bit all have two layers of inner and outer drill rods, and can be driven relatively independently.
All Terrain technology enables enhanced rock drilling at a low fluid level, decreasing overall jobsit, inimizing cleanup and reducing environmental impact. The inner pipe works as a mechanical motor driving the drilling rod during the bore, and the outer pipe thrusts the bit forward while stering the drllsha. During backreaming, the outer pipe transmits the machine torque downhole.
Advantages of all terrain drilling technology:
- Large effective torque for rock drilling, high efficiency, and high speed
The general mud pump driving screw motor is a soft connection. Under the soft connection, the pressure loss of the drill pipe and water pipe is large, the screw motor has 5% mud leakage for lubrication and cooling, the wear of the screw motor stator and rotor will cause internal leakage.
While all-terrain drill is hard-connected. Under this situation, only the friction between the inner and outer drill rods needs to be overcome, and the inner drill rod directly drives the cone in front of the pilot drill bit.

If selecting all-terrain drilling, no mud screw motor is required, can reduces fuel consumption, reduces drilling tool loss and saves labor costs.

All-terrain drill pilot drill bit, from the cone connection surface to the probe chamber is only 80cm, the guidance is more accurate.
- Low sand content requirements
Mud motors generally require that the sand content of bentonite should not exceed 0.5%, but it is difficult to ensure such a low sand content during on-site construction. The wear of the stator rubber increases with the increase of sand content, and the life span is drastically reduced. The motor that could originally be used for 150 hours can now only be used for 80 hours or even less.
When using a all-terrain drill, the inner drill rod directly drives the roller drill bit, which has no more wear and tear and a longer life.
- Wide applicability of rock drilling
The pilot drill bit has a short total length and high direction control accuracy, so it is easier to change the angle and can complete rock work within 100 meters.
